Summer Vibes
The New Year is already showering down sunshine upon us and hopefully signalling the start of a brilliant year ahead. Can you feel the good vibes?
Have you resolved to live life to the extreme this year? Or perhaps you are taking it easy and simply want to enjoy the sunshine and music. Soak up the simple things?
During the busiest time of the year, several young writers found the time to write some passionate and entertaining entries to our summer writing competitions. Amid the hecticity of a flustered Santa Claus, the insane mosh pits in the shopping centres, a colourful explosion on the Harbour and the sound of millions scrawling down last minute resolutions, we found our winning entries and here we announce the lucky bunch:
TOM TOM CREW at the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
High five to Christopher Davis who entered the intriguing story ‘Pickpocket‘ that explores the extreme nature of skillful theivery.
High five-to the side- for Tyson Edwards who entered ‘Stick to Your Guns‘ which is the tale of an extremely arrogant man whose life philosophy backfires.
Both entrants have won a double pass each to see the Tom Tom Crew, the extreme hiphop-circus act performed live at the Sydney Opera House!
DAYS LIKE THIS Summer Music Festival
Party time begins for a couple of lucky individuals who spent some time writing about what makes a day worthwhile for them…and funnily enough there was an interesting pattern in the submissions. Entrants seemed to enjoy writing about others ironically hurting themselves or receiving their karma in a humorous manner. How entertaining.
4th place: ‘My Saviour‘
“…As my new friend started running down the street with a hole in his pants, I decided I had to take that back about Bible salespersons not being trustworthy. It’s days like this that make life worth living. He was my saviour.”
3rd place: ‘Golly Butcher‘ by Cleaman
“Golly Butcher continued walking, slowly recovering from the amazing miracle he had just seen. The dog had survived whatever it come up against and continued to enjoy life on the other side…”
2nd place: ‘Thump‘ by Jordan Guiao
A perfect drum, like a set in a festival
and it’s wild and percussive and perfect
and it’s oh god and it’s yes and it’s
just like that
thumpthumpthump.
A sheen of bodies, mellow butterscotch and raspy
resonating the perfect pitch
THUMPTHUMPTHUMP.
1st place: ‘Days Like This Make Life Worth Living‘ by Sophie Trevitt
“She had walked out of a crumbling world of paper houses and paper men. A world where men crashed to their knees under the weight of their own burdens. She had walked into one where towers were made of sturdy stone and dotted with windows and doors; where people linked arms and held hands and passed strength between them to heal over scars and to dress fresh wounds…”
